Mandarin Oranges = Love!

Do not over look this humble mandarin orange.

It’s not just delicious to eat.

It just might pull together 2 otherwise disparate singles, and thus help form a new and happy couple. How so? Well, according to the Hokkiens, and the Chinese New Year lunar calendar, today WAS the last day of Chap Goh Mei/Meh.

What this means is that according to tradition, that would be the 1 day of the year where girls are allowed to dress in their finest and go out, where they would scribble their names and contact details on mandarin oranges and chuck them into some river, where hordes of eager young men would scoop ‘em up and see if love would blossom.

I never knew all this until I read it in today’s The Star, which had heaps of photos on it. The article online is less informative.

So, apparently, this ritual started not in China, but in Penang, where it continues today.

Does this mean that the more mandarin oranges you throw out, the higher your chances of landing a good guy?
Then why not just chuck a bagful?

Or perhaps, if the girls used a little creativity, and use suggestive looking mandarin oranges, they might increase their odds of landing a guy too. This guy would most likely have a healthy and interesting imagination.

Hmm…the whole thing reeks of something funny to me. I suppose it IS a deeply humorous and entertaining event
for the hordes of singles/cheaters/adulterers there. And things are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

But it IS a good idea…a good social event…I reckon it doesn’t REALLY work. Apparently this GUYS are doing this shit too nowadays. What if a guy picks up another guy’s details!? Horror of horrors innit. Why don’t more single females try it out? Would it work for other races? Has any1 ever studied the love life of people who indulged in
this before compared to ppl who never did, so we can get SOME kind of measurement comparison?
